Eid al-Adha at Washington Square Park: Serving Our Neighbors Through Compassion and Community
A Celebration of Sacrifice, Compassion, and Interfaith Service in Kansas City
This Eid al-Adha, the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City (DIKC) was honored to celebrate the spirit of sacrifice and compassion by joining our friends and community partners at Washington Square Park to serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness.
For us, Eid is not only a time of celebration with family and friends. It is also a time to remember those in need, share our blessings, and put our values into action through service.
This meaningful outreach was made possible through a partnership with our friends at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church and their Hunger Outreach Team. Together, we had the opportunity to share a meal, conversation, kindness, and fellowship with members of our Kansas City community.
A Community Coming Together
The response was deeply moving.
More than 150 guests attended the picnic, with many arriving throughout the 75-minute serving period. Volunteers experienced firsthand the joy that a warm meal and a welcoming presence can bring.
One of our partners from All Souls shared afterward that there were many happy faces among the guests, with some returning for seconds. Their message reflected something simple but powerful: service is not only about providing food—it is about helping people feel seen, respected, and valued.
The Hunger Outreach Team also shared how much they look forward to this collaboration, marking the third year of partnership with DIKC for this meaningful service.
Service That Builds Bridges
The outreach at Washington Square Park is part of a remarkable ongoing effort to serve people in need in Kansas City. KCTV5 recently highlighted the weekly outreach, reporting that volunteers have continued bringing meals to Washington Square Park every Tuesday night and have not missed a week in eight years.
For DIKC, being part of this effort represents the very heart of our mission.
We believe that communities become stronger when people of different faiths and backgrounds come together around shared values—compassion, dignity, generosity, and service.
Eid al-Adha reminds Muslims of the importance of sacrifice and caring for others. Working alongside our Christian friends and other community members at Washington Square Park gave us an opportunity to turn that message into action.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church and its Hunger Outreach Team for their friendship, partnership, and commitment to serving our neighbors.
We are grateful to everyone who volunteered, prepared food, welcomed guests, and helped make this Eid service project possible.
Most importantly, we are grateful to the people we had the privilege of meeting and serving. Their presence reminded us that compassion knows no boundaries of faith, background, or circumstance.
At the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City, we remain committed to building bridges, serving others, and bringing people together through meaningful relationships and shared acts of kindness.
This Eid al-Adha, we were reminded once again that when we come together, we can make our community a little more compassionate, one meal and one relationship at a time.
